Dr. Martens: from work shoes to viral must-haves
Who doesn't know the Dr. Martens combat boots ? They are the shoes that have marked the 90s fashion and which are now once again at the top of all women's wish lists. Yet the company's history dates back over a century and, perhaps, it is not what you expect.
Entrepreneurs Benjamin Griggs and Septimimus Jones their objective was to produce boots for miners And British Army soldiers : they were black in colour, with 10 holes and a studded sole.
Later, in 1943, the German doctor Klaus Martens , after breaking his foot, began to study a type of cushioned sole, so as to be able to withstand it more. And, on his own, he created a brown boot with 8 holes, inspired by the miners' boots.
If initially the idea was not very successful, after some modifications and collaboration with Herbert Funck , the boots began to be very popular. Thanks to the sole made with rubber waste from the German Air Force and the upper made with old German army uniforms.
Within a short time the amphibians they were dedicated to success , both for comfort and for resistance over time. And they liked them too women !
The first factory was opened in 1952 a Monk and since then it has never experienced a crisis. Griggs later purchased the company and changed its name to Dr. Martens .

And so they arrived on the market in 1960 first shoes : the Dr. Martens 1460 . Not black, the first model was proposed in cherry red (burgundy) and equipped with 8 holes. The following year the laced : le Dr. Martens 1461 with 3 holes.
